PreSchooLER Mandarin Skills study

Do you have a preschool age child who has been exposed to Mandarin at home? If so, please consider joining this interesting one-time study.

What is this study?

In the U.S., children from Chinese-speaking homes (full or partial use) often do not receive proper learning educational and speech  or language intervention services. When these children's English abilities are limited, professionals need to have benchmarks for their Chinese language skills to know how they are actually developing. This study is intended to assess preschooler's Mandarin skills.

Who is doing the study?

Jennifer Hamano, a doctoral student in the Linguistics Program of the CUNY Graduate Center.

What happens during the study?

During the study, your child will look at cartoon-like images while hearing sentences in Mandarin and he/she will then need to point to the image that matches the sentence heard. There is a short break after approximately every 20 sentences.

Why should you consider having your child participate?

You child's participation will help other children in the community because the result of the study will give us an in-depth understanding of how our children learn, and what is the most efficient way to help them learn. You will also have an opportunity to receive professional feedback on your child's Chinese language development.

Who can participate?

Children between the ages of 4 years 0 months and 4 years 11 months old. Children who live in a household where at least one caregiver speaks Mandarin to the child.

How long will it take?

The study will take approximately 1.5 hours including the short breaks.

What do I get?

You will receive professional feedback on your child's Chinese language development.

Where is it?
